Not everyone can fly to Hawaii or spend time with relatives in the warm environs of Southern California for spring break, but there's still plenty of fun to be had in the Wood River Valley.
For the budding artist, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts will offer its "Spring Is in the Air" art camp for grades one through five at The Center in Hailey. Participants will learn the fundamentals of art while exploring their surrounding environment. Young artists will focus on creative activities that include a variety of visual-art-making techniques, including drawing, painting, textiles and collage. Students will also incorporate the worlds of music making, dance and storytelling into their work.
Camp meets Monday through Friday, March 15-19, from 9 a.m. to noon for grades one through three and 2-5 p.m. for grades four and five with instructor Diana Sharpless. Sharpless holds a Ph.D. in art education/multicultural education from Ohio State University. She taught last summer's art camp for The Center.
Both the morning and afternoon sessions will meet at The Center's classroom in Hailey at the corner of Second Avenue and Pine Street. Cost is $50 for Sun Valley Center for the Arts members and $65 for non-members. For details, visit sunvalleycenter.org.
The Blaine County Recreation District will hold a Spring Break Adventure Camp at the Community Campus in Hailey from Monday through Friday, March 15-19, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The camp is for kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Daily adventures will include skating in Sun Valley, swimming at the YMCA, SNRA Naturalist Adventures and two days at Quigley Winter Park near Hailey. The Wood River Community YMCA in Ketchum will host a spring break camp for kindergarten through fifth-grade students Monday through Friday, March 15-19, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Camp is $35 per day for members and $50 for nonmembers. Attendees will get to pick from numerous YMCA activities, including swimming, rock climbing, sports and games, hikes and field trips. Lunches and snacks should be sent with kids. The Sawtooth Botanical Garden's Spring Break Snow School will take place Monday through Friday, March 15-19, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the garden south of Ketchum. Kids ages 4 to 12 will learn about seasons, winter, snow, the water cycle and how plants and animals survive in the winter. In addition, the garden will have outdoor games and activities including snowshoeing. Camp is $20 per day for garden members and $25 for non-members. Camp is 10 percent off if registered for the entire week.
The garden will also offer Colorful Fun at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden with Blago of Blagojce Fine Art Gallery today from 2-4 p.m. for kids 7 and older. The class is $5 for members and $7 for nonmembers. For details on camp and class, call 726-9358.
